500 Years Post Reformation

Image
On the 31st day of October 2017, it was exactly five hundred years since Martin Luther nailed his ninety-five theses to the castle church door in Wittenberg (or mailed his theses to the Archbishop of Mainz) and started what eventually came to be known as the Protestant Reformation. In the pitch darkness of the middle ages, Luther like other reformers before and after him sought to protest the loss of Christianity's original identity and doctrinal probity and restore the theological foundations of the early church's belief and practice. Perhaps the most important question they sought to answer is that of salvation— "What must one do to be saved?" Is Salvation a result of human effort entirely, a mixture of the grace of God and the efforts of man or a matter of the grace of God entirely from first to last, without any human component? While the Protestant Reformation provided a scriptural answer to this question of salvation, five hundred years after that restorat...

Mental Health in the Workplace.

Image
Health has traditionally been defined as the absence of an obvious illness or disease, however this view of health and wellness is parochial and does not necessarily consider the human as an entity with a mind, emotions, intellect and a physical body. Health seen in its proper context entails the ability to fully function as a member of a community. This view of health is incorporated into the WHO definition of Mental Health as a state of well-being in which every individual realizes his or her own potential, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to her or his community. There exists a complex relationship between work and health— work is good for mental health and also the capacity to work productively is a function of good emotional well-being. While a good work environment enhances a person's overall well-being, a negative work environment where employees are exposed to bullying, harassment, poor...

The Forty-Sixth Psalm

Image
Psalms  46 God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.  Therefore will not we fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea... We live in troubled times. Very troubled times and I can say that over and over again. From natural disasters that leave communities desolate and ravaged to personal illnesses whose cause and cure remain elusive in spite of the technological advancements of the twenty first century to Wars, rumors of Wars, Civil unrest, terrorism, economic uncertainty, etc ;the Words of Eliphaz the friend of the Patriach Job has never seemed more true: "...man is born unto trouble, as the sparks fly upward." See Job5:7 How do we respond and deal with the uncertainties of the future? Does the Holy Scripture provide help in dealing with the struggles of our times? That is the purpose of the Forty-Sixth Psalm— trust in the unfailing presence and ability of the Lord inspite of doubts, tes...

Fame, Wealth and Pleasure. Is this All that Matters? John Erhabor

Image
Have you ever wondered what benefit you have being a Christian? Looking at the world now, we see that the wicked are getting richer, the thief is amassing wealth and living his or her life in abundance . We come back to ourselves and ask, "what benefits are there in associating with Christ?" One thing I have always said when this question is brought up to me is: What is their end? The Bible in Proverbs 37:38, NIV, "But all sinners will be destroyed; there will be no future for the wicked." Here, we can clearly see that the end of the wicked is really not pleasant so we have no cause to envy. No wonder it is said in Proverbs 24:1, "Do not envy the wicked, do not desire their company..." Three things define the world today: fame, wealth and pleasure. These three are what the world pursues. The sad thing is that fame, wealth and pleasure can not sustain in the long haul. It can only give satisfaction but for a short while. As Christians, our aim sho...

The Purpose of the Law

Image
Galatians  3:16  Now to Abraham and his seed were the promises made. He saith not, And to seeds, as of many; but as of one, And to thy seed, which is Christ.  3:17 And this I say, that the covenant, that was confirmed before of God in Christ, the law, which was four hundred and thirty years after, cannot disannul, that it should make the promise of none effect.  3:18 For if the inheritance be of the law, it is no more of promise: but God gave it to Abraham by promise.  3:19 Wherefore then serveth the law? It was added because of transgressions, till the seed should come to whom the promise was made; and it was ordained by angels in the hand of a mediator. Introduction The Epistle of Paul the Apostle to the Galatians is a three-fold letter. The first two chapters are Personal and here, Paul discusses his life before salvation as a Pharisee, his zeal about the Law, his passion about wiping out Christ and the name Christ from off the surface of the earth a...

Alcohol Consumption and Cancer : The Facts

Image
Introduction Alcohol is a psychoactive substance with dependence-producing properties that has been widely used in many cultures for centuries. The harmful use of alcohol causes a large disease, social and economic burden in societies. Alcohol causes as much harm as smoking and hypertension. While moderate alcohol use may offer some health benefits, heavy drinking — including binge drinking — has no health benefits. Alcohol use has been linked to several types of cancer and other health risks, but this is complicated by the fact that low-to-moderate alcohol intake has been linked with a lower risk of heart disease. Still, lowering the risk of heart disease is not a compelling reason for adults who don’t drink alcohol to start. There are many ways to reduce heart disease risk, including avoiding smoking, eating a diet low in saturated and trans fats, staying at a healthy weight, staying physically active, and controlling blood pressure and cholesterol. Epidemiology  Wor...
